Indian model Bhavita Mandava has become the center of attention in the fashion world following her appearance at this year’s Met Gala.
While the Met Gala red carpet was filled with extravagant and dramatic fashion statements, Bhavita appeared in what looked like a simple zip-up jacket and denim-style trousers.
However, it was later revealed that the outfit was not made of denim at all, but from delicate silk muslin fabric printed to resemble denim. The design was created by the luxury fashion house Chanel.
Some fashion critics praised her understated look, describing it as a silent challenge to the excessive extravagance often associated with the Met Gala.
Others, however, argued that choosing such a minimal outfit while representing a culturally rich country like India diminished the significance of the global platform.
The look especially sparked criticism on social media, where some users claimed it weakened India’s representation on the international stage.
The 26-year-old model from Hyderabad has a story often compared to a real-life fashion fairytale. In 2024, while studying for a postgraduate degree in architecture at New York University (NYU), she unexpectedly entered the modeling industry.
Her life changed after a fashion agent spotted her at a New York train station while she was on her way to have biryani with a friend.
Within just two years, she became a model for some of the world’s leading luxury brands including Bottega Veneta, Dior, and Chanel.
Despite her rapid rise in the fashion industry, Bhavita says she still tries to stay true to her roots.
“I still go to castings wearing my university T-shirt and jeans. My agent jokes about it,” she told British Vogue.
According to Bhavita, her Met Gala outfit was inspired by the clothes she wore on the day she was first discovered, symbolizing the journey from her ordinary past to the global fashion stage.
Amid both praise and criticism, Bhavita Mandava is now being recognized as a symbol of effortless natural beauty and a new voice of simplicity in the global fashion world.
